Toxic ingredients could include anything from harsh chemicals, allergens, organ/endocrine disruptors, dangerous synthetics, ambiguous fragrance to environmental threats.
You can check if you are purchasing a non toxic lotion by reviewing the ingredient list on the product, rather than allowing the brand’s marketing to do all the talking. Read on to learn what to look for on your labels – knowledge is power!

Ingredients you avoid by using a non toxic lotion
Among many others, the worrisome toxins you’d be avoiding by choosing a non toxic lotion for your skincare routine include:
Artificial fragrances
Mainstream products use artificial fragrances to create the scent of their product. Look for ‘fragrance’, ‘perfume’, ‘scent’ or ‘parfum’ on the ingredient listing label.
The Environmental Working Group explains that “when you see “fragrance” on a personal care product’s label, read it as “hidden chemicals.” Phthalates, used to make fragrances last longer, are associated with damage to the male reproductive system, and artificial musks accumulate in our bodies and can be found in breast milk and have even been linked to cancer. And if you’ve got asthma, watch out– fragrance formulas are considered to be among the top 5 known allergens, and can trigger asthma attacks.”
When you switch to non toxic lotion, you are avoiding artificial fragrance and choosing a Phthalate free moisturizer that uses natural options such as organic essential oils or botanical extracts.
Parabens
These chemicals preserve shelf life. Look for ‘isobutyl-’, ‘butyl-’, ‘isopropyl-’ and ‘propylparaben’ on ingredient labels.
The Environmental Working Group state that “scientific studies suggest that parabens can disrupt hormones in the body and harm fertility and reproductive organs, affect birth outcomes, and increase the risk of cancer. They can also cause skin irritation.”
When you switch to non toxic lotion that is made small batch from ethical brands you avoid Parabens and instead harness the power of nature.
Did you know that a naturally occurring derivative of citrus also makes for a great preservatives in a Paraben free lotion?!

It was nice to receive samples. I have used the organic Fiji soaps for many years, I really like the multi functionality, great as a shampoo, shaving cream. The scent of pineapple and jasmine is very delicate and not overwhelming which I really appreciate. Also gentle enough for sensitive skin.
The Peppermint wakes you up and it leaves your whole body soft and moisturized!
this soap is fantastic, its clean feeling, smells great, lathers up wonderfully, and is oh so kind to the skin. i have psoraisis and i have no problems with this soap at all. i recommend it highly and will purchase again and again.
PEGs
These petroleum-based chemicals are used to thicken and soften products. Look for ‘polyethylene glycol’ or PEG followed by a number on ingredient labels.
It has been found that some PEGs contain ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane. These two chemicals are known carcinogens and respiratory irritants. The International Agency for Research on Cancer lists links both with known human carcinogens.
Switch to a non toxic lotion and enjoy into PEG free skincare!
BHA/BHT
Another preservative to extend shelf life of lotions and creams. Often seen on ingredient labels as butylated hydroxyanisole or butylated hydroxytoluene.
The David Suzuki Foundation explains that “BHA and BHT can induce allergic reactions in the skin. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies BHA as a possible human carcinogen. The European Commission on Endocrine Disruption has also listed BHA as a Category 1 priority substance, based on evidence that it interferes with hormone function. BHT can act as a tumour promoter in certain situations.” There are also concerns that it negatively impacts marine life after washing into the waterways.
The use of BHA is prohibited by the European Union, but there are no restrictions in the U.S. (apart from in California where a warning is required on labels). It’s best to start shopping for a non toxic lotion instead and avoid the risk of coming into contact with these chemicals.
DMDM Hydantoin
This is a slow releasing formaldehyde chemical, used to preserve a product over a long period of time. This ingredient is known as an immune toxin, allergen and asthma trigger.
When looking for the best non toxic lotion, choose a formaldehyde free skincare product that uses a plant-based preservative instead, putting your health over shelf-life goals.
Other worrisome chemicals
Retinyl, Palmitate, Triethanolamine, Cyclomethicone, Siloxanes, DEA, MEA, and TEA.
These chemicals can be avoided by choosing a non toxic lotion.
