Considering the switch to natural lotion?
Trying to live a cleaner, more natural life can be overwhelming at times. One of the biggest challenges people face is replacing their personal care and body products. The easiest way to start is one product at a time. First, ditch the toxic chemical filled moisturizers and switch to natural lotion to get the balling rolling. These ten great reasons to make the change will leave you feeling empowered and ready to choose plant-based!
What is a natural lotion?
A natural lotion is a transparent product that does not contain any hidden ingredients, harsh chemicals or artificial fillers. We consider natural ingredients to be clean, botanical and plant-derived. The brand’s ethics and ingredient sourcing standards should also be considered.
10 reasons to switch to natural lotion
1). Exposure
It’s best to start with the products you are exposed to most. Products that get daily use, multiple times a day, should be considered first. Making the switch to natural lotion for your face/body moisturizer is a great place to start as it’s usually used on a large percentage of your body at least once or twice a day.
2). Natural ingredients work
Clean, pure, plant-based ingredients often come with their own added whole body benefits that can target skin concerns and maintain whole body health to rival their synthetic competitors. In fact, they often work even better! And come without the added ingredient worry or potential irritants. Switch to natural lotion to enjoy nature’s holistic healing ability.
3). Less of the bad means more of the good
When you switch to natural lotion you are not only removing potentially harmful and irritating toxins from your personal care routine, but you’re making space for more of the good stuff to fill up your lotion bottle.

4). Sensitive and kind
Natural, plant-based ingredients are kinder and more gentle on the skin and respiratory system. There are less potential irritants, and more naturally soothing botanicals.
5). Better for the whole family
A clean and natural moisturizer is gentle enough for the whole family to enjoy, which makes it marvelously multifunctional. Save money and space whilst being a role model for your family and their whole body health when you initiate the switch to natural lotion.
6). A self-regulated industry
It’s sad to say, but we cannot rely on mainstream brands to be transparent. Their focus is on mass production and crafting products that last on the store shelf, no matter ingredient sacrifice. Plus, there’s big money behind marketing. Don’t get green washed, check the ingredient listing, certifications and brand ethics. When you switch to natural lotion you are taking responsibility to be informed in a surprisingly under-regulated industry.

It was nice to receive samples. I have used the organic Fiji soaps for many years, I really like the multi functionality, great as a shampoo, shaving cream. The scent of pineapple and jasmine is very delicate and not overwhelming which I really appreciate. Also gentle enough for sensitive skin.

this soap is fantastic, its clean feeling, smells great, lathers up wonderfully, and is oh so kind to the skin. i have psoraisis and i have no problems with this soap at all. i recommend it highly and will purchase again and again.
7). Eco-conscious
Clean, natural lotions will often come with better, more environmentally friendly, industry standards in general. And they have a better cycle of life too. Whatever is in your lotion will eventually end up back in the environment. Synthetic ingredients do not break down as well in nature and often cause issues for the eco-system they end up in (which in turn can also cause toxicity issues when we consume the plants or animals from that eco-system). Choose plant-based and biodegradable products from ethical brands instead.
8). No harm to animals
Clean lotions are usually against animal testing and using animal byproducts. (Check the brand ethics or label to be sure!). When you switch to natural lotion and cruelty free skincare in general, it means you are opting for the industry standard you expect and deserve. Say no to animal cruelty, animal testing and animal byproduct ingredients.
9). Support the brands that care
There are so many brands across the globe creating skin and body care. As a consumer we have a choice, so why not switch to natural lotion and support the brands that have our wellness as well as the environment’s in mind? We can shape the culture of the industry standards we want to see by voting with our dollar. Money talks and your choices send a message.
10). To avoid toxic chemicals and harsh synthetic ingredients
And last but certainly not least, when you switch to natural lotion that is small-batch and plant-based, you avoid all the nasty ingredients that mainstream lotions can be made with to increase corporate profits and shelf life. These harsh chemicals have the potential of weakening the surface layer of your skin, getting absorbed into the body, causing irritations and reactions, triggering skin issues, adding to organ toxicity and restricting your whole body balance.
Try this travel sized natural Lotion in Pineapple Coconut – a Pina Colada for your whole body! Unwind with a tropical fusion created from pure botanicals that are known to be high in Vitamin C and antioxidants. Infused with raw, cold pressed coconut oil for ultimate skin hydration and healing.
Among many others, the synthetic toxins you’d be avoiding by making the switch to natural lotion include:
Artificial fragrances are what mainstream products use to create the smell of their product. They’re usually written in ingredients listings as ‘Fragrance’, ‘perfume’, ‘scent’ or ‘parfum’.
The EWG confirms that “when you see “fragrance” on a personal care product’s label, read it as “hidden chemicals.” Phthalates, used to make fragrances last longer, are associated with damage to the male reproductive system, and artificial musks accumulate in our bodies and can be found in breast milk and have even been linked to cancer. And if you’ve got asthma, watch out– fragrance formulas are considered to be among the top 5 known allergens, and can trigger asthma attacks.”
When you switch to natural lotion, you are avoiding artificial fragrance and choosing organic essential oils or botanical extracts used by plant-based brands instead.
Parabens are a group of chemicals that preserve shelf life. Usually listed on ingredients as ‘isobutyl-’, ‘butyl-’, ‘isopropyl-’ and ‘propylparaben’.
The EWG explains that “scientific studies suggest that parabens can disrupt hormones in the body and harm fertility and reproductive organs, affect birth outcomes, and increase the risk of cancer. They can also cause skin irritation.”
When you switch to natural lotion that is made small batch from ethical brands you avoid Parabens and instead harness the power of nature. Did you know that a derivatives of citrus and coconut also makes for a great preservatives!
PEGs are petroleum-based chemicals that are used to thicken and soften products. Look for ‘polyethylene glycol’ or PEG followed by a number on products.
It has been found that some PEGs contain ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane. These two chemicals are known carcinogens and respiratory irritants. The International Agency for Research on Cancer lists links both with known human carcinogens.
Switch to natural lotion and avoid the chance that the PEGs in your moisturizer are contaminated.
DMDM Hydantoin is a slow releasing formaldehyde chemical to preserve a product over a long period of time. This ingredient is known as an immune toxin, allergen, asthma trigger and is even being investigated further for links with hair loss and infertility.
When making your decision to switch to natural lotion, choose a product that uses a plant-based preservative instead, putting your health over shelf-life gains.
BHA/BHT, another preservative to extend shelf life of moisturizing agents. Often seen on ingredients as butylated hydroxyanisole or butylated hydroxytoluene.
The David Suzuki Foundation explains that “BHA and BHT can induce allergic reactions in the skin. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies BHA as a possible human carcinogen. The European Commission on Endocrine Disruption has also listed BHA as a Category 1 priority substance, based on evidence that it interferes with hormone function. BHT can act as a tumour promoter in certain situations.” There are also concerns that it negatively impacts marine life after washing into the waterways.
The use of BHA is prohibited by the European Union, but there are no restrictions in the U.S. (apart from in California where a warning is required on labels). It’s best to switch to natural lotion and avoid it altogether.
Other worrisome chemicals that can be avoided with a switch to natural lotion include: Retinyl Palmitate, Triethanolamine, Cyclomethicone, siloxanes, DEA, MEA and TEA.
